DAY SCHOOL
Day School is a year-long programme, offering artists a shared studio space alongside monthly education days with guest artists, support and advice for work and careers, and other professional development opportunities, community projects and social occasions.
Day School is committed to the idea of alternative education as a meaningful response to the current climate of UK arts education provision, and the opportunity to contribute to maintaining a thriving artistic community in the amazing city of Bristol.
Invited guest artists/professionals reflect the many different artistic practices represented in the UK. Day School is an inclusive and welcoming environment, and the artists we work with are selected with these values in mind.

Day School Provides:
-A year-long programme designed to support individual progression and professional development.
-A small cohort of 14 (maximum) artists and practitioners with a broad range of disciplines and interests.
-24/7 access to a shared studio at St Anne’s House, Bristol, the space will be organised and set up collaboratively by the participants (whole studio space c.39m squared)
-Monthly education days (Saturday) with invited guest artist/educator (including talks, workshops, crits, 121s, discussions and other group projects).
-Past guests have included Michael Dean, Harold Offeh, Kerry Campbell, Heather Peak, Bryony Gillard, and Conway & Young.

-Opportunity to work collaboratively and to contribute to workshops and talks
-Annual group project or exhibition
-Day School participants are eligible to apply for New Contemporaries

Who is day school for?
Day School might have particular relevance for the following:
-Artists / Makers / Designers / Architects / Musicians / Illustrators / Film makers / Writers and those engaged in an arts practice to communicate ideas
-Those who have been practicing for some time in South West / Bristol, and are looking for fresh ideas or opportunities for community and collaboration
-Those new to the South West / Bristol looking to meet other artists and work within a close knit peer network
-Those looking to move to South West / Bristol wanting to make connections in the city as a practitioner
-Those who feel excluded from mainstream or postgraduate education for any reason, such as rising costs or a programme that conflicts with other responsibilities
-Recent graduates looking to continue developing their practice with access to a lighter touch education programme
When is it?
Day School 2024/25 runs August 2024 – July 2025
Provisional Education Days for 2024/25 will be:
17 Aug, 14 Sept, 12 Oct, 16 Nov, 14 Dec, 18 Jan, 15 Feb, 15 Mar, 12 Apr, 17 May, 14 June, Away Day to Liverpool Biennial 2025 July (date tbc)
Cost
£110 per month (payable on the first of each month Aug 2024 – July 2025)
Day School is very happy to support any participants looking to apply to outside funding to cover fees
How to apply for Day School 24/25
Please send an email (subject: ‘Day School Application 2024/2025’) to dayschoolbristol(at)gmail(dot)com with the following:
-A short expression of interest telling us your motivations for participating in Day School (max 350 words or link to an audio or video recording max 4mins).
-An attached PDF portfolio (please ensure files are a max 3MB) or a link to your website or instagram
-A statement about your practice or your interests with a bio and/or cv
– Shortlisted applicants will be invited to an informal online conversation to discuss the programme and their practice (20 mins)
*All applicants will receive an email to confirm receipt of their application so please follow up if this does not arrive – this is not automated but the email account is checked weekly.
If you would like to apply for one of the bursaries outlined below please indicate so in your application (e.g. VASW why you would like to be considered / KWMC include your postcode). If eligible, you may apply for more than one bursary. Please note all bursaries are currently under review and awaiting confirmation for 2024/25 – all bursaries should be confirmed by May 13th 2024.

Bursaries
Knowle West Media Centre (KWMC) 2024/25 bursary details:
-A FULL BURSARY to a participant based in Knowle West (BS4) who identifies as from a working-class background OR A HALF BURSARY to a participant based in South Bristol (BS3, BS4, BS13, BS14) who identifies as from a working-class background
In addition, KWMC and Day School would be interested if this person’s practice is socially engaged / participatory – or if they are looking to develop in this area
The bursary recipient will be asked produce a one-off workshop or talk to be hosted at KWMC
Bath Spa University – 2024/25 Bursary details:
-A bursary for a 2024 (BA) Fine Art, Creative Arts Practice, Photography, Product and Furniture Design, Textiles, Fashion, or Interiors Bath Spa Graduate covering 11 months of the 12-month programme from 1st August 2024.
UWE 2023/24 awarded a full bursary to:
-A UWE undergraduate final year art student (fine art, art & writing, or drawing & print graduating in summer 2024) who has a socially engaged art practice, and a strong commitment to collaboration and community
Visual Arts Southwest (VASW) 2023/24 awarded:
-£200 bursary, open to any applicant
Shared studio information
Day School is situated within the St Anne’s House creative community hub organised by bricks.
The shared studio sits amongst a variety of artist studios, social enterprises, and community organisations. Day School participants are able to share in the wider life of the building and bricks programming including the annual Open Studios.
St Anne’s House is close to Bristol Temple Meads train station (making day school accessible to the wider South West area).
Accessibility
Day School is happy to discuss any accessibility requirements to ensure the programme is suitable and supportive to each individual’s needs. St Anne’s House is accessible via ramps external to the building, and an internal lift, with accessible toilets on the ground floor.
